Modified IKEA bunkbed

July 7, 2009 · Posted in Uncategorized · 4 Comments

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a real soft spot for modern childrens furniture. Since no one ever requests it I usually only make it for my own kids and it is a blast.  My two sons have shared a bunkbed during the, well never ending remodel of our home. As most of you know the IKEA double bunk is pretty sweet and affordable. After making a new room for our oldest son we thought it proper to  spruce up the little ones room a bit. Since he has a bit of a flair  for the dramatic I decided to take the existing IKEA bunk and make the lower bed in to a mini movie theater / writing desk for him.img_3135

This little number is made from Makore (wood) clear anodized aluminum and a little stainless steel made in to handles. It has:  Rope lighting for dramatic effect, down lighting for homework, a lockable  cabinet  and drawer which has everything imaginable stuffed in to it,  a personalized beanbag for viewing comfort,  a coat hanger for his robe, a small hickory chair and of course a bed.   The 22″ television is from Bestbuy $199.00, The rug and bean bag are from pottery barn kids about $100 bucks, lighting from home depot $13 for rope lighting $19 for down lighting, The  flannel curtain fabric was $23, and made by my lovely Wife and great friend Alice in one afternoon, a totally awesome feat. The rest is made from scrap ie free.

To say he was thrilled is an understatement !

Clear Anodized aluminum Door Skins etc.

I recently was reminded that I needed to add a little material to the blog.  Sorrry folks I think I have just been lazy. We have a ton of stuff coming up and I promise I’ll put it up ASAP.

In the mean time here is a door I put together for a big clear anodized aluminum project I did here in town. This door is 7′H by 6′ W. Its hinged on a third and weighs in at about 600 lbs.

I simply love this door.  I used 78- 4′x10′ sheets of aluminum on all of  the Soffit and Facia  and ceilings as well as most of the exterior walls in this house.

Its awesome.

This really was a giant pain in the butt, which took a full year.  However it was  a great opprotunity. Not very many people are brave enough to clad their house in metal.  Word of warning, the neighbors wanted to kill me, though I think they have settled down now.

Modern doors etc.

Ok as promised though slightly late, here are the new door designs.

The white doors are solid slab Oak with 3/4″ glass with a White laquer finish.

This is a mahogany family solid slab with a slighty tinted orange stain and a clear urethane finish. This design is a bit more Mid Century I think.

You know how we love feedback take a look.

New door designs

November 14, 2008 · Posted in Uncategorized · 19 Comments

In the absence of good affordable design in the local market, we here at Modfab decided to do our own. While I realize that there are only a few members here.  Im going to pretend as though there were many.  As some of you know I recently began running a new series of doors, both interior and exterior. The first one as you see below is a solid core oak slab with glass and black lacquer finish, a white one is to follow next week.

We are going to keep churning the new designs out until my brain leaks out my nose or they catch on, preferably the latter. My hope is that people will see these doors and other things like them and begin the conversation about the need for good design, perhaps people will be inspired to design their own doors, cabinets, chairs, tables, baths, and of course fruit baskets. Ok so it sounds a little corny but hey maybe it will work.

Being that this is my first blog I may have messed up a thing or to but as time goes bye we will work out the kinks.

HOORAY MODERN !
